Solar power illuminates remote Kashmir villages

Children are able to study during night hours, which was a rarity earlier," he added.The state-run Jammu & Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) provided solar power facility to 330 village households, including a solar plate, dry battery and five Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CFL).Villages that benefitted include Hamlapati, Gujjarpati, Wadar Chak, Wadar Payeen, Wadar Bala and Wadar.Whether it's because they have faith in Ben Bernanke and the modern non-stick knife system or because they're fundamentally skeptical of something that doesn't pay a dividend, generate earnings. "Chimneys and lanterns run on kerosene-oil caused chest infections due to smoke," she told Khabar. "They produced dim light which hardly illuminated a corner of a room. Bright solar light illuminates the entire house, making it lively." Poor lighting at night affected students' learning and performance in examinations. "Now under the bright solar power, I study for at least three hours during a night," tenth-grade student Mohammad Salim told Khabar."In absence of proper lighting, it was difficult to study with concentration," he said. "The facility has enabled me to study with ease in calm atmosphere during night hours." During summer season, the light back-up doubles to ten hours due to improved day temperature," said district officer Malik.Each family paid a subsidized amount of only Rs 700 ($13) for the solar light installation, which has a market value of Rs 22,000 ($409).Beneficiaries, according to Malik, will have to replace the batteries after five years.
